Casa de América in Madrid will host an exhibition of independent Cuban filmmakers

MADRID, Spain.- The Casa de América in Madrid will inaugurate on June 22 a film exhibition with works by independent Cuban filmmakers that will last until July 13.

This film cycle will be inaugurated with the projection of the short film the cigars (2020), by Carla Valdés León, and the feature film the zero option (2020), by Marcel Beltrán.

At the closing the fiction feature film will be screened Blue Heart (2021) from the writer, director and producer Miguel Coyula.

Fiction shorts also make up the sample: Eternal glory (2018), by Yimit Ramirez, The rodeo (2021), by Carlos Melián, and Tundra (2021), by José Luis Aparicio; as well as documentaries petricor (2022), by Violena Ampudia; umbra (2021), by Daniela Muñoz, home (2019), by Alejandro Alonso and the amundsen dogs (2017), by Rafael Ramírez.

According to Casa de América in its websiteall the sessions will be accompanied by their directors, in person or virtually, and colloquiums will be held at the end of the projections.

It also indicates that all functions will be free and viewers will be able to access the room until full capacity is reached.

On June 21, the day before the opening, there will be a round table prior to the exhibition, entitled “Cuban independent cinema: new imaginaries.”

In this conversation, moderated by the journalist and film critic Dean Luis Reyes, the filmmakers José Luis Aparicio, Carla Valdés León and Daniela Muñoz will take part.

José Luis Aparicio Ferrera, graduated in Film Direction from the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA), has directed, in addition to the aforementioned, the fiction short film the dryer (2019) and the documentary medium-length dreams to hove (2020, co-directed with Fernando Fraguela), among others. His films have been selected by festivals such as Sundance (United States) and Locarno (Switzerland).

For her part, the director, producer and curator Carla Valdés León has directed the short documentary films two homelands (2019) and December days (2016).

While Daniela Muñoz, graduated in Photography Direction at ISA, is co-founder of the independent Cuban production company ESTUDIO ST. Among her productions is the documentary feature film mafifa (2021), winner of the International Film Press Award (FIPRESCI) at the Flying Broom International Women’s Film Festival.
