Carriers threaten closures and demand fuel price freeze

This Monday, March 28, transporters unionized in the Provincial Chamber of Transport of Western Panama, will carry out a road closure to demand that the Government freeze fuel prices.

According to José Dimas, president of this group, they are requesting the freezing of diesel at $2.40 and fuel at $3 or, alternatively, that the rate (cost of the ticket) be revised, established since 2011 and which has not been revised since then.

“We do not want to transfer that cost to the users, who we know are the most affected so far,” he said, reiterating that the carrier can no longer take it and they sent a message to the National Chamber of Transportation (Canatra) to take a letter on the matter since they have not seen firm actions by the leadership to help solve this problem.

Dimas called on carriers from the rest of the country to join this fight and find a common solution.

On the other hand, the Modern Trade Union of Carriers and Allied Workers held a protest on the premises of the National Assembly, demanding that fuel prices be frozen.

Iván López, leader of this Union, said that they would go to the residence of the Republic to present a list of demands that includes freezing the price of fuel and putting a stop to piracy.

He assured that the Canatra does not represent them, so they took action independently.

During the early hours of the T of Chapala, in the district of Arraiján, drivers of school buses closed the road making the same request.
