Carpintero denounces raid of his workshop in Havana: “I have nothing else to live on”

MIAMI, United States. — Authorities of the municipality of Habana del Este (Havana) and members of the National Revolutionary Police (PNR) They raided the carpentry shop of Idael Cutiño Marrero, a 73-year-old man with physical limitations who works with wood.

The operation took place on April 1. That day, officials and agents of the PNR broke into Idael’s residence (Vía Blanca, Km 9½, #5, “Pepito Tey” Farm, Celimar, Guanabo) to carry out the seizure.

Cutiño Marrero told CubaNet that the municipality’s Agriculture delegate, a group of between 10 and 12 people, plus seven or eight police officers, showed up at his home.

“They arrived, checked the wood and told me it was confiscated,” said the carpenter, who revealed that the reason for the raid was the alleged illegal origin of the wood he kept in his workshop.

The complainant adds that they took one of the people who was with him at the time, and that the individual was imprisoned for a day and a half.

“They asked him for 5,000 pesos of bail. Then he went to the Department of Agriculture and they fined him 1,000 pesos, ”added the carpenter, who has all the work permits and licenses in order.

Idael Cutiño Marrero explained to this newspaper that he has been working in carpentry for 34 years, and that the equipment in his workshop was built by himself, with his own efforts.

“I made those irons, with my hand,” explained the carpenter, who currently cannot work because he is recovering from ischemia. Meanwhile, his workshop is being used by his nephews, who are helping him.

Idael added that carpentry is his only means of work and the only financial support for his family.

“I have nothing else to live on. That is my support, that is what I eat with, that is how I support my family, ”she maintained.
