But over the weekend, the City Council held a meeting and swore in Lasmit Verde as the new mayor of that town until the end of the term. According to the new administration, “this appointment seeks to guarantee the continuity of municipal management and administrative functioning in the town.”
Residents of Carora rejected the persecution against Oropeza and the appointment of a new mayor, linked to the PSUV, in a statement“This act aims to remove the legitimate mayor Javier Oropeza, democratically elected by the popular will under the Democratic Unity Roundtable, which constitutes a flagrant violation of popular sovereignty and the constitution of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.”
The Caroreños’ statement also cites a series of articles of the Constitution that, they say, are being violated by the recent actions of the PSUV in that town. “We make an urgent call to the democratic sectors, to the organizations defending human rights and to the international community to firmly condemn this attack on democracy and take immediate action to protect the life, peace and dignity of the citizens of the Torres municipality and its capital.”
They also stated that they will not allow “state terrorism to prevail over the will of the people.”
