Carolina Ache presented her resignation to President Luis Lacalle Pou

The vice chancellor made the decision before the meeting on Monday with her sector of the Colorado Party.

Carolina Ache resigned from her position as Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs to President Luis Lacalle Pou.

The vice chancellor participated in the Council of Ministers at noon this Monday and presented her resignation to the president hours before the meeting with the sector of the Colorado Party and its leader, the Minister of the Environment, Adrián Peña, who arrived in the country in the last few hours. after his trip to Canada.

Ache has been questioned in recent months for its connection to the granting of the Uruguayan passport to drug trafficker Sebastián Marset, with whose lawyer, Alejandro Balbi, he held a meeting. The Broad Front accused the vice chancellor of lying in Parliament on this matter, after WhatsApp messages were disseminated in which the undersecretary of the Ministry of the Interior, Guillermo Maciel, warned her about the “dangerousness” of Marset, who in those moments he was detained in Dubai and sought to access the Uruguayan passport.

The meeting with Ciudadanos and Ache’s explanations

After learning about the conversations with Maciel, Ache had held a meeting last Thursday with Ciudadanos legislators who demanded explanations for his role in issuing the passport to Marset.

In that instance, the vice chancellor presented a nine-page report justifying her actions, and in which he mentioned the sequence of events that led to the issuance of the document.

Ache maintained that the units that acted in the procedures (particularly dependent on the General Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs), according to the regulations, report directly to the Minister of Foreign Affairs. “In accordance with current regulations, the vice minister does not have any competence to intervene in these matters, which is why she does not intervene in the process,” said Ache..

And I add: “I never gave, formally or informally, any instruction to the intervening agencies that acted normally within the sphere of their powers as it appears from the statements in the administrative investigation of all the intervening officials and that was exposed in the conclusions of the instructor and of the Lawyers’ Room of the Chancellery”.

In addition, the hierarch explained that the “informal” chats with Maciel did not warrant informing the foreign minister, Francisco Bustillo. Montevideo Portal
