Carol Estefanía, the 15-year-old girl hit by a drunk taxi driver in Bogotá, died

The minor did not resist the serious injuries suffered in the accident caused by the driver’s irresponsibility.

Bogotá is shocked by the death of Carol Estefanía, the 15-year-old teenager who had been seriously injured after being run over by a drunken taxi driver on November 8, in the Santa Rita neighborhood, town of San Cristóbal. The minor remained in intensive care since the day of the accident, but unfortunately she did not manage to survive the serious injuries she suffered in the impact.

The person responsible for the incident, identified as José Eduardo Chalá Francowas driving under the influence of alcohol, with degree II drunkennessand in speeding. Ten other people were also injured in the accident, including several minors. The driver was caught flagrante delicto and presented to the police. Attorney General’s Officewhere accepted the charges for attempted murder and aggravated personal injury.

With the confirmation of the death of Carol Estefanía, the Prosecutor’s Office studies reformulate the charges to charge the crime of aggravated homicidewhich could considerably increase the penalty that the defendant would face. Meanwhile, the guarantee control judge ordered that Chalá Franco remain under security measure in prison.

The tragedy has revived the debate on lack of control and effective punishment for repeat drivers. Chalá accumulated more than ten comparisonsseveral for driving while intoxicated, speeding and violating the license plate. Furthermore, that same day the vehicle was not authorized to circulate, which aggravated citizen indignation.

Relatives, friends and neighbors of Carol Estefanía demanded that this case not go unpunished. “My daughter was not to blame for an irresponsible person getting into a car drunk,” the young woman’s mother expressed with pain.

Civil organizations and road defenders have asked the Government to reinforce alcohol controls and apply more severe penalties to avoid tragedies like this. Carol Estefanía’s story now becomes a symbol of the demand for justice and the right to travel safely on the streets of the capital.
