The carnival artist of the União da Ilha do Governador samba school, Severo Luzardo, died this morning (12), aged 59. According to the municipal government of Uruguaiana, the city in Rio Grande do Sul where Luzardo was born in 1962, he died of lung cancer.
The artist began his carnival career at the Rio Grande do Sul samba school Os Rouxinóis de Uruguaiana and had been leading the preparation of the União da Ilha carnival since 2017. Before that, he worked at samba schools belonging to groups with access to Rio de Janeiro.
In mourning, União da Ilha, which is parading this year for the gold series, the second division of Rio’s carnival, canceled its rehearsal show scheduled for today.
Luzardo also had stints in film and TV as a costume designer, in productions such as the soap operas Ciranda de Pedra, Cordel Encantado and Flor do Caribe.
