Carmona and Alfonsín highlighted support from former Spanish presidents for Malvinas

The former Spanish presidents reaffirmed the need for the Governments of the Argentine Republic and the United Kingdom to resume negotiations.

The Secretary of the Malvinas, Antarctica and South Atlantic of the Foreign Ministry, Guillermo Carmona, and the Argentine ambassador to Spain, Ricardo Alfonsín, highlighted the “support for dialogue and negotiations” for the Malvinas between Argentina and the United Kingdom of Great Britain expressed by former presidents of Spanish democracy and warned that “there is less and less room for reluctance to dialogue”.

The Foreign Ministry official said that it is “support for the position expressed by the Argentine State” in favor “of resolving the sovereignty dispute that persists between the United Kingdom and Argentina,” while the ambassador highlighted ” the generosity” of former presidents.

Carmona and Alfonsín spoke in this way before the declaration of four former presidents of the Spanish government along with other personalities from that country’s politics, who urged the United Kingdom and Argentina to resume dialogue on the Malvinas Islands.

In this context, President Alberto Fernández yesterday thanked the Argentine ambassador in Spain, who promoted the declaration of the former heads of government of that country, Felipe González, José María Aznar, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero and Mariano Rajoy.

The Secretary for Malvinas, Antarctica and the South Atlantic of the Foreign Ministry said in statements to Télam that “it cannot be ignored that there is a long British reluctance” for which, “although (the support of the former Spanish presidents) is referred to to both States, has a very strong value in favor of the Argentine position”.

In that sense, he affirmed that it is about what “Argentina has been demanding, the reopening of dialogue and negotiations that were interrupted before the 1982 South Atlantic conflict.”

Carmona also highlighted Alfonsín’s initiative and pointed out that “all the Argentine embassies, within the framework of the Malvinas Agenda, have been developing a series of actions for 40 years to make the Malvinas Cause visible.”

“And these actions adopt different modalities according to the realities of each country where Argentina has diplomatic representation,” the Foreign Ministry official explained, emphasizing that “it is very significant and important that Ricardo Alfonsín has promoted this action,” which “involved calling former presidents and other very important figures in Spanish politics”.

On the other hand, he warned that “the United Kingdom surely takes note of this type of expression that is very categorical, from European leaders who join other expressions that are also very categorical”, which “have been given during the last two years”.

“We believe that there is less and less room for reluctance to dialogue and a reopening of negotiations that is required by international law, by resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly on repeated occasions,” Carmona said.

Likewise, he pointed out that “we hope and maintain the expectation that the United Kingdom not only complies with the United Nations resolutions that it has been failing to comply with, but also that it attends to the clamor that is raised in different countries of the world.”

“This clamor that in many cases comes from very prominent figures, in favor of the sovereignty dispute being resolved through international law and in a peaceful manner,” said the Secretary of Malvinas, Antarctica and the South Atlantic of the Foreign Ministry.

The Argentine ambassador to Spain, for his part, said in statements to El Destape Radio that “all Argentines have to be grateful, me in particular, for the generosity, the kindness, the disposition quickly shown by the former presidents and the other officials” so that “Argentina can resolve the problems we have with the United Kingdom in a civilized manner”.

“Beyond the differences that exist between the political parties, there are some issues that we all share, for example the need to resolve the differences that may exist between the countries in a peaceful way,” Alfonsín warned.

In that sense, he expressed that “we have to be very grateful to the four presidents and the rest of the officials for giving their support to the dialogue.”

Likewise, he considered that “dialogue is important at the national level as well” and wished that “hopefully we could also dialogue more in politics and that all those who place so much emphasis on the need for dialogue would also do so”.

The former Spanish presidents reaffirmed “the need for the Governments of the Argentine Republic and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to resume, as soon as possible, the negotiations aimed at finding a prompt solution to the sovereignty dispute over the Islands Malvinas, South Georgia and the South Sandwich and the surrounding maritime spaces”.

In the declaration, the members of the support group considered that these negotiations must be carried out “within the framework of the resolutions of the United Nations, the Organization of American States and the provisions and objectives of the Charter of the United Nations.” States, including the principle of territorial integrity”.

“In this sense, we highlight the successive resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly that urge the Secretary General to carry out good offices efforts, in order to resume negotiations aimed at finding a peaceful solution as soon as possible. to the aforementioned dispute,” said the declaration of the support group for the Malvinas dialogue.
