Carlos Martí will not direct in the next National Baseball Series

The renowned and long-lived director of baseball Carlos Martí Santos confirmed this Wednesday the cessation of his responsibilities at the head of the Alazanes de Granma team, current monarchs of Cuban baseball, ahead of the next National Series.

In a press conference held at the Mártires de Barbados stadium in that province, the experienced manager said that due to personal and health problems, he had requested his release from the political, governmental and sports authorities of the territory for a year and a half, according to a report of the Cuban News Agency (ACN).

It is a difficult time for someone who has been a baseball player for 54 years. “I will continue to be close and support where I can,” he said during the exchange with the media.

Martí Santos leaves the fields as the most successful manager of Cuban baseball after winning four titles in the National Series with the Alazanes, in the years 2017, 2018, 2021 and 2022.

At the head of the Farmers roster, made up of players from the provinces of Granma and Las Tunas, he also lifted the I trophy Cuban Baseball Elite League (LEBC), on January 22. Thanks to this result, he was in charge of the aforementioned cast, which with some reinforcements, participated in the Caribbean Series, recently held in the capital of Venezuela. His successful career includes winning the Selective Series in 1981.

Juan Enrique Orozco Amaya, Provincial Baseball Commissioner, reported that Leonardo Soto Agüero, who has spent several years in management with Carlos, will lead the Granma team in the 62nd National Series, scheduled to start on March 22.

Martí also had opportunities to lead national teams and was in charge of the team that represented Cuba in the VI World Classic, held in 2017.
