Carlos Manzo, the mayor of Uruapan who sought help to stop organized crime

Carlos Manzo, the mayor of Uruapan who sought help to stop organized crime

The mayor who asked Sheinbaum for help

The mayor asked President Claudia Sheinbaum for federal support to confront organized crime.

“If order is not put here, in Uruapan, soon at the national level we will hear a strong uprising, of voice, of justice and, if necessary, even of weapons, because people are already fed up,” he declared last September.

Since taking office, Carlos Manzo has been characterized by his frontal attack against the criminal organizations that plague the municipality.

A few weeks ago he sent a letter to the Ministry of Public Security of Michoacán, in which he formally requested high-caliber rifles to equalize the weapons capacity of municipal police officers with that of criminals.

He challenged the federal government for security without bullets

His administration arrested an alleged plaza boss of the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG) and Manzo publicly asked the municipal police to “shoot down without consideration” criminals who resisted arrest.

Due to these statements, President Claudia Sheinbaum questioned the mayor, because his position did not respect due legal process.

“It is wrong. Rule of law. In other words, for a person who commits a crime there is an Accusatory Criminal System in Mexico and what there has to be is an investigation folder or an arrest in flagrante delicto, and evidence that allows determining whether the person is guilty or not,” explained the president in her morning conference on May 23.

“So, the other thing is to return to the war against drugs and that’s not it. That had a cost and continues to have a very big cost in our country,” he added.

In response, the mayor challenged President Sheinbaum to pacify the region without shooting the alleged criminals. He assured that, if that was achieved, he would resign from office.
