As the “crab of the decade”, the Attorney General of the Republic, Tarek William Saab, described the kidnapping, disappearance and finally, the murder of Professor Carlos Lanz, almost two years after the event that occurred on August 8, 2020.
Mary Cumare, wife of Professor Carlos Lanz, would have paid $8,000 to her lover, Glen Castellano, to look for hit men to carry out the murder.
Cumare had requested the murder of Lanz three months before the event, reported the Prosecutor. “The body must never be found,” Cumare asked his mistress, Glen Castellano.
The Attorney General, Tarek William Saab reported that so far 13 people have been arrested for their involvement in the kidnapping and subsequent murder of Professor Carlos Lanz.
«The accusations continue, I do not rule out new detainees in the case. Investigations are continuing,” Saab said.
“This event was so thoroughly organized that they had the perfect alibi for the perfect crime, as they revealed it in their necrophiliac gatherings,” said the Prosecutor according to the statements of those involved in the case.
“Today with irrefutable, convincing and devastating evidence, we reveal why, when and where this abominable crime occurred and they unworthily pointed the finger at the Venezuelan State,” said the Prosecutor when giving an introduction before proceeding to recount chronologically and in detail the details of the case in a press conference held at the headquarters of the Public Ministry this Wednesday.

voluntary disappearance
The Prosecutor recalled that at the beginning of the investigations, we maintained the thesis that “the strange and enigmatic disappearance of Professor Carlos Lanz was voluntary,” he stressed.
“The so-called ‘Search Committee’, a kind of parallel prosecution, expressed its anger because in the public appearances (the Prosecutor’s Office) insisted on this thesis, that the disappearance was voluntary. There were no elements that determined a violent act. We never ruled out any other thesis, although they said there was even a possible incursion of foreign mercenaries,” Saab explained.
“Lanz, being a former guerrilla, a person with a long career, was not going to go out in the middle of a radical quarantine, in a pandemic, with anyone, it had to be someone he trusted extremely,” he said.
On August 20, his wife, Mary Cumare, reports that she left the house on August 8 at 8 am and that her husband was at home. She said that her daughter realized at 11 in the morning that Lanz was not at her house.
On August 9, the Prosecutor’s Office was notified of his disappearance. “We had 6 prosecutors dedicated to the case, if we add the regional ones, it reaches a dozen prosecutors dedicated to the case and more than 200 proceedings carried out to resolve it,” said Saab.
As of the meeting on April 28, one of the people close to the family, a domestic who worked with them for 20 years, changed residence.

Glen Castellano, rats out Cumare

Findings at the La Fortaleza farm
It was on the afternoon of Sunday, July 2, when the raid was carried out on the La Fortaleza farm, located in Cojedes near the town of El Baúl, together with a complete team of professionals, including the canine unit.

The arrested and charged
The Attorney General announced the accusations made against the 13 people and announced that this July 6, the Public Ministry processed, by way of necessity and urgency, before the 4th Court of Crimes Related to Terrorism and Criminal Gangs, the corresponding arrest warrants, against:
- Maxiorisol Cumare (Lanz’s wife and alleged co-author) for the alleged commission of contract killings, criminal association, corruption and simulation of a punishable act
- Glenn Castellanos (ex-partner of Cumare) for the alleged commission of contract killing, association to commit a crime and simulation of a punishable act.
- Tito Viloria was charged with the crimes of contract killing, conspiracy to commit a crime, conspiracy to enter into contracts and simulation of a punishable act.
In relation to Elis Becerra hired killer and criminal association. Regarding José Antonio Pinto Moreno and Hely Enrique Pinto Moreno (presumed murderers) they were charged with contract killings and criminal association.
Zaida Suárez (Viloria’s partner) was charged with contract killing, conspiracy to commit a crime, concert to conclude a contract and simulation of a punishable act. Darwin Zambrano (stepdaughter’s partner), Oliver Medina (Cumare’s lover) and Maryuri Acevedo (domestic) were charged with concealment and simulation of a punishable act, while Diego Atehortua (friend of the brother-in-law) was charged with concealment.
Alyeska Berenice Gil Cumare (stepdaughter) and Abyayala Esperanza Lanz Cumare (daughter) were charged with concealment and simulation of a punishable act.
