MIAMI, United States. – This week, Cuban-American Congressman Carlos GiménezRepublican from Florida and representative of the 26th congressional district of the “sunshine state”, took the fight for the release of Cuban political prisoners to the United States Capitol, according to a report published on its official website.

Giménez, the only current Cuban-born member of Congress whose family fled the communist regime, demanded the “immediate release” of Cuban political prisoners in a presentation that included more than 100 Cubans convicted for their political thinking or criticism of the Cuban regime. the island.

Pointing out that there are thousands of political prisoners in Cuba, Giménez highlighted the situation of Fredy and Katya Beirut, father and daughter who are serving political prison in Cuba.

“The Beirut family was unjustly convicted for the alleged crime of sedition in the circus courts of the Castro regime. Fredy and Katya Beirut are rotting in Castro’s gulags for simply exercising their fundamental human rights during the protests of July 11, 2021 in Cubawhere they demanded freedom and better living conditions on the island,” said the congressman’s office.

“Please join me in demanding the release of Katya and Fredy Beirut and the immediate release of all political prisoners in communist China,” Giménez asked.

Also this week Congressman spoke about the threats of communismspecifically from China, from the Museum of the Victims of Communism in Washington DC on the 40th anniversary of President Ronald Reagan’s speech on the “Evil Empire”.

“We need the spirit of Ronald Reagan today because we have to face what I think is an even bigger challenge, which is the Communist Party of China,” Congressman Gimenez said, according to another statement from its official website.

“Fighting free speech and trying to censor it is a hallmark of communist regimes. I am completely against it: more than 100 million people have died in the last century due to the evils of communism, ”he lamented.

Before coming to Congress in 2020, Gimenez served as the mayor of Miami-Dade County for nearly a decade. Currently, he represents Miami-Dade County and the Florida Keys. The congressman has long advocated for sanctions against the Cuban regime.
