Carlos Ángel Valdés: from Mufasa in the musical ‘The Lion King’ to La Voz de España

MIAMI, United States. – Cuban singer Carlos Ángel Valdés Carbonell became a finalist in the Spanish television contest La Voz in 2021 and played the character of Mufasa in the Spanish musical The Lion King.

In an interview with Cuban newspaperthe Cuban singer tells that drom an early age he discovered his passion for music, specifically at a mass in which he sang and surprised those present with his skills.

When talking about his time at La Voz España, Valdés highlighted the importance of the behind-the-scenes team: “What you don’t see on the screens is humanity and all the value that people have who don’t appear in front of the camera. It’s a great team, I always felt at home”.

Despite his experience as Mufasa in The Lion KingNerves never left him on stage at La Voz, which led him to look for ways to control them, such as doing planks and squats before going out to sing.

The impact of his participation in La Voz en Cuba was something that surprised him. When he visited his mother and grandmother years after the show, people had approached him since he arrived at the airport to congratulate him: “I never had a real sense of the impact my participation in La Voz had there.”

Taking advantage of his visit, Valdés was able to sing for his family at Café Solás, an event that attracted more people than he expected, leaving some even unable to enter.

Regarding his departure from The Lion Kingthe most watched musical in Spain, the artist explained that, although it was an enriching experience, it was also a very sacrificed life that left little room for personal fulfillment. Therefore, he decided to focus on his career in music: “Now I want to focus on my career in music,” he said.

The singer feels a special connection with his roots and Cuban musicians: “There’s nothing like home. I have a lot of chemistry with Cuban musicians, sometimes we are not aware of how prepared and seasoned we come out of the Cuban schools. There are things that we Cuban musicians share, such as language and sensitivity”.

Finally, he assured that faith in oneself should not be lost. “The most important thing is to have faith in yourself, want it a lot and work, the opportunities will come,” she said.
