Caribbean Series: Panama defeats Colombia to get their first win

Angel Valdes | February 3, 2023

Ariel Sandoval and Michael Wielansky hit two home runs to support the pitching work of Harold Araúz and the Federales de Chiriquí beat the Vaqueros de Montería of Colombia by a score of 6 runs to 5 and get their first win in the Greater Caracas 2023 Caribbean Series.

Araúz, who took the win, was in trouble in several episodes but found a way to get out of them in good shape, in the end he pitched six innings where he allowed three runs and was decisive in stopping the Colombian offense that had won the day before. Puerto Rico 7-1.

In the sixth inning Ariel Sandoval took it out of the park alone and Michael Wielansky also hit a home run with one on board in the next inning to give the Federales a definitive advantage that they would no longer lose in the game.

For José Mayorga, Manager of Panama, the victory gives the team confidence “it is a weight that we take off knowing that we already have that first victory and it gives us more encouragement to continue tomorrow and the remaining games.”

This Saturday, February 4, Panama faces Curaçao from 9:30 in the morning in search of a new victory, where Edison Frías was announced as the starting pitcher.
