Data from the Public Security Institute (ISP) show that crimes such as cargo and vehicle theft registered a drop of more than 40% across the state in September this year, compared to the same period in 2024. 
On the other hand, police productivity increased during the period with more seizures of rifles and drugs. The data was released this Monday (20).
Cell phone theft, one of the crimes that most affects the population, remained practically stable: in September this year, 3,849 devices were taken compared to 3,842 registered in September last year, an increase of 0.2%.
Bicycle theft increased by 10% compared to September 2024. There were 356 bicycles taken from their owners compared to 323 in the same month of 2024.
Thefts in public transport, when robbers enter buses to take passengers’ cell phones, increased by 13% compared to September 2024. This year, 717 devices were taken in this situation, compared to 636 in the same month last year.
Police productivity
For the first time since the beginning of the historical series that began in 2007, the Civil and Military police seized 593 rifles in the first nine months of the year. In other words, an average of two rifles were removed from circulation from the hands of criminals per day.
Still in police productivity, other indicators that recorded good results this year were: 12,898 vehicles recovered; 31,691 arrests in the act; 19,114 drugs seized and 4,591 weapons taken out of circulation.
Heritage
Crimes against property registered a drop across Rio de Janeiro in the month of September. The number of cargo thefts fell 46% in the period – there were 182 cases in 2025, compared to 339 in the same month of 2024, the lowest rate for September since 2023.
Vehicle thefts also showed a significant drop. In September 2025, there were 1,801 occurrences, compared to 3,094 in the same period last year – a reduction of 42%.
The same trend was observed in street robberies, which fell 14%, with 4,448 victims in September this year, compared to 5,189 the previous year.
“The positive results are the result of evidence-based planning, integration and strategic actions. The reductions in crimes against property and the increase in police productivity reinforce the security forces’ commitment to society” stated the ISP’s CEO, Marcela Ortiz.

- street robbery: 4,448 victims in September 2025, a 14% reduction compared to September 2024, which had 5,189 cases;
- vehicle theft: 1,801 records in September 2025, a 42% drop compared to 3,094 incidents in September 2024;
- seizure of rifles: 593 rifles seized in 2025, an increase of 2.8% compared to September 2024 (577 seizures);
- drug seizure: 19,114 seizures in nine months in 2025, growth of 3.9% compared to the same period in 2024 (18,391 seizures);
- weapons seizure: 4,591 seizures in nine months in 2025, an average of 17 weapons seized per day;
- arrest in the act: 31,691 arrests in nine months in 2025, an average of 70 people arrested per day;
- vehicle recovery: 12,898 vehicles recovered in nine months in 2025, an average of 47 recoveries per day;
- robbery: 52 victims in 2025, 20% less than in 2024, when 65 victims were recorded;
- deaths due to State Agent Intervention: 519 deaths in September 2025, a 7% drop compared to September 2024 (558 victims).
The data released by the Public Security Institute refers to occurrence records (RO) drawn up at Civil Police stations in the State of Rio de Janeiro during the month of September.
