Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in Peru and produce the greatest burden of disease in the country. Globally, cardiovascular diseases are responsible for 17.9 million deaths each year.

That is why World Heart Day is commemorated every September 29, with the aim of raising awareness among the population about the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, through healthy eating, regular physical activity and preventive medical check-ups.
The cardiologist of the Directorate of Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases of the Ministry of Health (Minsa), Carlos Díaz, expressed that Eight out of 10 heart attacks can be prevented by following healthy habits that optimize cardiovascular health.
The main risk factors are high blood pressure, sedentary lifestyle, inadequate diet, overweight or obesity, diabetes, smoking, high cholesterol, stress, inter alia.
“There are checkups that we should have periodically, such as taking blood pressure, weight and height, knowing the value of cholesterol and glucose, in order to detect any problem in time and receive timely treatment,” indicated the specialist.
In addition, he recommended including a healthy diet based on the consumption of fruits, vegetables, foods with fat of vegetable origin and avoiding the intake of ultra-processed products, high in fat and sodium, as well as the use of cigarettes.
