Cardinal Brenes asked the parishioners to pray the rosary during the largest religious festival in Nicaragua and give a “great gift” to the people and to Pope Francis
The Archbishop of Managua, Leopoldo Brenes, offered this Sunday, July 17, a “prayer crusade” of the Holy Rosary for peace in Nicaragua and the world, on the eve of what will be the 43rd celebration of the Sandinista revolution next Tuesday, July 19. , date that marked the overthrow of dictator Anastasio Somoza.
Cardinal Brenes took advantage of the homily offered at the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, in Managua, to urge the parishioners to start the chain of prayer and to pray that, in addition, that friendship prevails, peace in the family and in the hearts.
“If we listen to Jesus and then we go to do the works, that work will be good, but if we do works without listening to Jesus we are going to fail because he will not have the strength,” Brenes said.

He also asked the parishioners that, during the largest religious festival in Nicaragua in honor of Santo Domingo de Guzmán -especially during the pilgrimages between August 1 and 10- they pray the rosary and offer a “great gift” to the people and the Pope Francisco.
This call occurs in the midst of the political crisis that Nicaragua has been experiencing since 2018, when protests were registered to seek to overthrow Daniel Ortega. That, after having “overcome” the inconvenience, generated a reaction on the part of the Executive of that country that has resulted in 190 political prisoners so far; 200,000 people exiled, more than 1,000 NGOs canceled and attacks on the Catholic Church, in addition to the arrest of two priests.

Cardinal Brenes’ request comes two days before the start of the celebrations for the overthrow of Somoza, whose date was declared a holiday. According to experts consulted by the VOA, a part of even the Latin American left has classified as “shameful” the actions that take place in the last years of the presidential couple’s mandate.
Rosario Murillo, wife of Daniel Ortega and vice president of Nicaragua, did not disclose whether they plan to celebrate the anniversary in the so-called Plaza de la Fe in Managua or schedule a public rally like those organized before the covid-19 pandemic. She also did not report on country delegations that would attend the event.
