Caracas once again dressed in purple to venerate the Nazarene of San Pablo

Holy Wednesday is the most important religious festivity in Venezuela and corresponds to the Nazarene of San Pablo. According to Monsignor Raúl Biord, Caracas will become on this day the “spiritual capital” of the country

The people of Caracas, together with the church, resumed normalcy on the Holy Wednesday festivity; especially the multitudinous Eucharist and the payment of promises to the Basilica of Santa Teresa where the image of the Nazarene of San Pablo rests.

From dawn and every hour and a half, the temple was filled with devotees to the centenary image of the Nazarene to adore it, give thanks or pay promises. Long queues were reported during the morning in the surrounding corners to enter and commemorate the passion of Christ inside.

Nelson Araque, one of the parishioners who went to the Basilica of Santa Teresa on the day, said that he left at 4:00 in the morning to pay a promise because his daughter was born without problems, despite the fact that she was born eight months old.

He did refer, however, that he saw fewer people than in previous years.

The area is guarded by different security forces, such as the People’s Guard and the Caracas Fire Department.

It is planned that the last Eucharist inside the temple will be at 3:00 pm; before everything is ready for the Archbishop of Caracas, Cardinal Baltazar Porras, to lead the homily in Diego Ibarra square before the Nazarene of San Pablo leaves in procession.

Around noon, the Bishop of La Guaira, Monsignor Raúl Biord, reported that there were a large number of people in the temple early on. He said that many families with small children; sick with wheelchairs, went to hear mass.

«Today, the Basilica of Santa Teresa becomes the spiritual capital of Venezuela. It is the most religious day in our country », she stressed.

He stressed that the “special affection” of Venezuelans is the Nazarene and he believes that it is because people identify with the fact that, like the image, he carries his cross inside.

Monsignor Biord took the opportunity to speak as secretary of the Venezuelan Episcopal Conference, asking the international community, and especially the countries that host migrants, to improve their treatment of them and to comply with international laws.

He recalled that those who migrate also suffer. In the same way, she expressed pain and indignation for those who died in the shelter in Ciudad Juárez, in Mexico.
