Mexico reported “extraordinary” growth in the production and export of light vehicles last September, of 31.4% and 33% respectively, due to the increase in demand from the United States, mainly, reported this Thursday the Mexican Association of the Automotive Industry (AMIA).
Automotive companies assembled 273,329 light vehicles during the ninth month of the year, adding 65,237 more units compared to September 2021, however, the figure is 16% lower than the pre-pandemic period of 2019.
According to the Inegi report, the automotive industry exported 259,792 vehiclesby sending an additional 64,498 units in the same month of 2021.
At a press conference, Fausto Cuevas, director of the AMIAexpressed that the favorable result in September is due to the sale of cars in the United States market that rose 9.5%, where “Mexico’s exports are notable, which given the low level of exports in 2021, in 2022 196,638 units were shipped.”
While in the accumulated from January to September, 1 million 653,290 light cars were exported to the US market, with an increase of 8.6% compared to last year.
The industry representative highlighted that the capacity of the plant used on average by the automotive industry rose to 78.7% from January to September, when in the same period last year it was 70.6%.
That level is still far from the levels of 2019 when the industry was operating at 83 percent.
The automotive industry has produced 2 million 511,482 units during the first nine months of the year, which represents an increase of 10% compared to the same period in 2021, but it is still 15.4% behind compared to 2029; meanwhile, exports reported an increase of 5.4%, by sending 2 million 123,261 vehicles.
