Capes launches public notice for research grants on climate change

The Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (Capes) published today (14) in the Official Diary of the Union (DOU) notice which allocates R$ 4.2 million to projects related to climate emergencies, extreme events and environmental accidents. According to the public notice, up to 12 projects will be covered, with grants for professors and researchers, focused on preventing and coping with emergencies, as was the case in Petrópolis, in February, when heavy rains left more than 230 dead. The objective is to seek solutions that can be applied to each region affected by this type of event.

In total, up to 72 scholarships will be awarded, 24 for master’s, 12 for doctoral degrees and 36 for post-doctoral degrees, intended for professors and researchers linked to graduate programs. stricto sensu academics, in the area covered by the public notice, recommended by Capes.

Projects must focus on research that can “effectively contribute to studies on prevention, mitigation and response to situations arising from climate emergencies, or analyze the impact of the extreme environmental event that caused a state of public calamity, floods and landslides, in federal units of the Brazil, between 2021 and 2022”.

According to Capes, in addition to developing research on climate emergencies, the grants will also help train human resources in the areas covered by the public notice: biodiversity conservation as a prevention strategy; prevention, mitigation and response strategies; impacts on social organization and public health; impacts and consequences on nature; impact on the local/regional economy; preventive and assistance public policies; geographic space: strategies and proposals for the reconstruction of the local social and economic environment and civil responsibility and the National Civil Defense and Protection Policy.

According to the schedule, the selected research projects will be valid for 40 months and should start to be implemented from August 2020.
