The National Water Agency (ANA) and the São Paulo State Water Agency (SP Águas) reported that the Cantareira System will operate in the restriction range, from October 1. That measure was not adopted since January 2022.

With the restriction, The State Supply Company, Sabesp, will be allowed to remove up to 23 cubic meters per second (m³/s) of waterinstead of 27 m³/s, currently in force.
Other measures is the pumping of more distant reservoirs of the capital, such as Jaguari (which is on the border with Minas Gerais), and the expansion of measures to avoid loss, such as the interruption of water supply at times with less demand.
Residents of the Metropolitan Region already face the reduction of water pressure from 19h to 5h.
According to the agencies statement, the current operation rules are suitable for the management of water resources of the Cantareira system, and monitor the data of water, flow and volume stored volume.
“We are acting rigorously, adopting measures with planning and anticipation, so that we can face this drought with the lowest possible impact on people. The Metropolitan Integrated System (Yes) is 32.4%, still above 30% that configure critical stage, but we have cases of system reservoirs where the reduction was higher, so we are acting to protect these resources,” said Camila Viana, president of SP Águas.
The Cantareira System supplies half of the population of the São Paulo Metropolitan Region and is formed by five reservoirs.
The São Paulo government also banned on Wednesday (24) the granting of any granting of water, superficial or underground in the state basins for non-emergency purposes, and allows changes in the amount of water captured in ongoing authorizations.
