Parliamentarian Ricardo Canese prepared and presented a bill for energy to be declared a universal human right. The goal is that in this country no family lacks energy.
The project establishes that the social tariff be extended up to 1500 kW/hour. So that the most humble families that consume up to 150 kW/hour have 100%, and then, there is a gradual decrease until families that consume up to 1500 kW/hour have a 10% discount.
This will represent a cost of US$ 140 million per month for the State.
The politician’s motivation to revive this project, similar to the one called “Ñane enegía” vetoed by the Executive in mid-2019, is due to the subsidies that Abdo Benítez plans to establish for four so-called “green” hydrogen companies. They intend to consume 20% of Itaipu’s power. This will represent around 10 million mW/hour per year. The subsidy that this will require will be US$1.75 billion a year. With this, Paraguay will be forced to import energy, something similar to what happened with Brazil, which imported energy for US$ 200 per mW/hour.
