The taxi union of the department of Canelones attacked the Uber private transport application and the fact that it is present in Canelones, since it would be subtracting profits.
Uber “has taken work away from us, we have had to remove people, we have had to reduce personnel,” he told Underlined Ramón Caraballo, representative of the Canarian union.
For them, Uber does not have “the same operating costs” as taxis, and works with “a rare, dynamic rate, which is not legalized.”
Taxis are regulated by the Ministry of Economy, and must respect the rates stipulated by law. However, Uber works freely and without any regulation, so it would be “an illegal competition because they are supported by the United States,” added the trade unionist.
Uber starts in Canelones
In the middle of the week, Uber opened a public call for drivers who want to work on its platform in the department of Canelones, and both the unions and the mayor were put on alert.
The Employers’ Association of Canelones (APC) rejected the arrival of the transport app, and Caraballo said that “it is unfortunate that we have to be suffering these attacks from foreign companies.”
“If Uber arrives, we would have to withdraw, we have to let Uber take care of it as it did in Montevideo. The rate is dynamic, which we do not have, our rate is governed by the Ministry of Economy”, he remarked.
From the Intendancy of Canelones they stated that an agreement has not been reached between Uber and the Canarian Commune. The mayor, Yamandú Orsi, said at a press conference days ago that “it cost us a lot to the point that we could not agree, I would have liked to have a more frank and productive conversation with the company or model, I do not rule out that we can move forward.”
The company asks for the following requirements:
- Be in possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the country in which you plan to work, a license that must be at least 2 years old.
- Attach a criminal record certificate with a maximum age of 3 months.
- Be self-employed or attach your company deed.
- Photo for your Uber profile where your face is identified, without sunglasses, centered and with a white background, that is, a photo very similar to the one you would use to renew your personal identification card.
