Canelones attracts investors but loses of identity of the coast worries

For two decades, Ciudad de la Costa experiences sustained growth both in number of inhabitants and in terms of infrastructure. And this process of expansion has increased markedly in recent years, registering levels of investment that place this area as one of the best ranked in the country. Only In 2020, 75 investment projects were presented for a total figure of more than US$ 1,200 millionof which 55 refer to real estate investments and among them 40% is already in execution.

According to data from the Investment Promotion Agency of the Municipality of Canelones —which was accessed The Observer—, the real estate sector is, by far, the most millionaire in Canelones and invested a total of US$ 3,531 million in developments for the area. The industrial sector totaled US$351 million, the commercial sector US$343 million and the logistics sector US$119 million.

The transformation of the territory is notorious, and at the moment it is supported by the development of the commercial and functional infrastructure that is related to the increase in inhabitants —according to the 2011 census it had 91,284 inhabitants, and since then the municipality has continued to grow—, and gives rise to a phenomenon that consecrates the City of the Coast as a territory of opportunities where there is still much to do.

Taking this process into account, The need arises to implement a work plan aimed at improving and increasing the quantity and quality of the investment projects that are located in Canarian territory. In this context, the program “Canelones: land of opportunities; a place to live”, which will generate an architecture and urbanism forum focused on the territory of Ciudad de la Costa.

The proposal of the forum is to have ten speakers to provide different perspectives on the development process in gestation, and thus enrich the look on a phenomenon that impacts the landscape of the area. Admission is by invitation, and will be made according to the businessmen’s relationship with the events.

“The support of the Municipal Government of Canelones and the Investment Promotion Agency of the Municipal Government, allows us to create a space where real estate developers, architects, urban planners, inhabitants and the state administration come together in such a way that the discussion is nourished by all possible views and concerns”, says a statement that explains the objectives of the program.
In addition, it explains that this space for discussion between real estate developers, architecture studios, construction companies and the inhabitants, It will generate substantial contributions on how an urban identity is built with the different interventions.

The opening

Last Tuesday, The program was launched at an event with the participation of businessmen from different industries, representatives of the Canarian communeincluding Mayor Yamandú Orsi, and the project managerDiego Flores.

“I want to thank all of you for having accompanied us in the process to inaugurate a space in which we intend to generate the conditions to debate about the territory we have, and the territory we wantFlowers began.

Then he said that months ago he had the first approach with the Investment Promotion Agency of the Municipality to propose the initiative, and He found an administration sensitive to generating these debates due to the responsibility that comes from being in charge of a department that has the strip of national territory with the highest growth recorded in recent years.

“The concern in terms of development on the part of the management at the head of the administration, is what allowed the territory grows generating what is so important for the construction of the community: the sense of identityof a link between the inhabitant and the territory,” said Flores.

He stressed that given the flood of investments that have been made in recent years, the identity of the department could be lost but, on the contrary, there was a vocation of the community with a correlation in the administration to maintain the character of semi-rurality of the territory.

Yamandu Orsi

The mayor of Canelones, Yamandú Orsi, also spoke at the event, beginning by recalling how the area was more than a decade ago: “Looking from one side to the other and remembering how everything was 15 years ago makes me aware that there has been a change, but it is a change that does not break the harmony of the City of the Coast“, he pointed. And he assured that, for it to happen in such a way, permanent discussion with the planning team was necessary.

In this sense, he concluded: “We must take advantage of this forum to be clear about what we have and how far we can go.”
