Canadian Spanki Project will vaccinate and sterilize pets in Trinidad for free

AREQUIPA, Peru – A free vaccination and sterilization campaign for pets through the Canadian Spanki Project will arrive in Trinidad, in Sancti Spíritus, as part of an initiative of the Network of Offices of the Historian and Conservator of the heritage cities of Cuba.

A report from the state newspaper Escambray He points out that foreign and Cuban professionals will be responsible for caring for the pets in order to carry out the different procedures.

As part of the initiative, some 50 surgeries are scheduled between September 10 and 12, while the 13th will be dedicated to training activities.

The Canadian project is coming to Trinidad for the third time, thanks to the Office of the City and Valley Conservationist. The services will be offered at its former headquarters in Media Luna, which will be used as a veterinary clinic for those days.

The premises have been adapted as a reception area for pets and operating and recovery rooms. Deworming will be carried out through another independent access, and will be done on a first-come, first-served basis, the report adds.

Ernie Alvarez Gonzalez, a specialist for Science, Technology and the Environment at the Trinidadian Office, says that the initiative has been well received by pet owners, who must plan the day of surgery in advance to avoid stressing their animals.

The Veterinary doctors Susana Alonso Ponce and Armando López are part of the Canadian project from Trinidad. Both agreed that sterilization is an important method to take care of the health of pets.

“This procedure prevents uncontrolled reproduction and reduces the population of stray and roaming animals, in addition to providing a longer and healthier life for our pets by preventing various diseases, such as breast and uterine cancer and uterine infections in females, and testicular, prostate and anal tumors in males,” explained Alonso Ponce.

Although in February 2021 the Cuban regime approved the Decree-Law No. 31 “On animal welfare” With the aim of “regulating the principles, duties, rules and purposes regarding the care, health and use of animals to guarantee their well-being”, the reality of these living beings is also subject to the serious crisis existing on the Island.

Shortages of food and medicine for animals and even persecution by the authorities are some of the problems faced by animal rights activists in Cuba.

Also, amid the lack of food in the country, A note from the Ministry of Agriculture (MINAG) He acknowledged last April “dog killings” in Mayabeque, omitting that it was done in order to sell the meat.

At that time it became known that at least three men were arrested in San José de las Lajas, allegedly kill the community’s dogs and sell them as pork or mutton, or as minced meat.
