Canada’s foreign minister calls for a peaceful and negotiated solution to resolve the current crisis in Venezuela. She believes it is imperative that everyone initiate processes that guarantee respect for the will of the citizens at the polls.

Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly said on Monday, August 5, that a peaceful and negotiated solution in Venezuela is what is needed to resolve the crisis in the country, which has deepened following the results of the elections in which the CNE declared President Nicolás Maduro the winner.

Through a statementJoly said it was “imperative” for all parties to initiate processes to ensure that the democratic will of the people expressed at the polls is respected and a “peaceful” transition process is established. She said Canada is prepared to work with its partners in the region to support this initiative.

He assured that his country remains and will continue to stand by Venezuelans in these challenging times.

Likewise, he condemned the fact that human rights violations and acts of violence have been recorded in Venezuela since the elections of July 28. In this regard, he called for the release of all those who are victims of arbitrary detentions and imprisoned, since citizens “cannot be the target of reprisals for exercising their democratic right.”

Canada believes that Venezuelans have demonstrated their commitment to restoring democracy in the country through voting and praises citizen participation in the elections. Canada criticizes the Venezuelan authorities for not respecting this action by the people by failing to publish disaggregated election data.

He pointed out that the fact that electoral witnesses and international observers have compiled the voting records provides credible evidence that the victory that the Maduro administration claims to have obtained does not correspond to the desire of the Venezuelan people, which is why they call on the CNE to be transparent.

The Canadian Foreign Ministry noted the past Monday, July 29 that in the presidential elections the people of Venezuela demonstrated their commitment to the restoration of democracy in their country by voting peacefully and massively.

“We call on the Venezuelan authorities to respect the will of the people, ensure transparency and publish detailed results from all polling stations,” Canada said on its social media account X.
