The Government of Canada sanctioned 11 senior Ortega officials on Monday, November 15, including ministers, presidential advisers, mayors and a head of a state branch. The sanctions are “in response to ongoing human rights violations in Nicaragua,” according to a statement from the Canadian Foreign Ministry.
Among those sanctioned is the president of the Supreme Court of Justice; Alba Luz Ramos Vanegas; the presidential advisor on economic issues, Bayardo Arce Castaño; to the Superintendent of Banks, Luis Angel Montenegro; the head of the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM); Salvador Mansell Castrillo; to the director of the National Energy Institute (INE), Jose Castañeda Mendez; and the manager of the Cargo Dispatch of the National Electricity Transmission Company, Rodolfo Lopez Gutierrez.
The sanctions also include the Vice Minister of Finance and Public Credit, José Adrián Chavarría; and the advisory minister and presidential delegate for Africa, the Middle East and the Arab countries, Mohamed Farrara Lashtar, nephew of the late Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi. The Sandinista mayors also join: Sadrach Zeledón Rocha, from Matagalpa; Francisco Valenzuela Blandón, from Estelí, and Leonidas Centeno Riveraby Jinotega.
With the exception of Arce Castaño, the other ten officials were also sanctioned this Monday by other governments. Ramos Vanegas was sanctioned by the United Kingdom, while the other nine high officials they were punished by the United States Department of the Treasury.
