Canada mourns school shooting that leaves 10 dead

He shooting occurred this Wednesday at a school in the town of Tumber Ridge, in western Canadahas so far left 10 dead and twenty people injured, according to information provided by the local police.

According to a report from the agency Efethe perpetrator of the massacre would be among the deceased people found inside the educational institution.

The reported information indicates that six of the lifeless bodies were found inside the school, and another two in a home. Another victim died while being taken to the hospital for treatment.

It is expected that the number of fatalities may increase, since it was also learned that two people were evacuated by helicopter from the scene of the shooting with extremely serious injuries.

Around 25 individuals were receiving treatment at a medical center for injuries suffered in this incident, the information states.

The local police also indicated that the search for more victims was continuing in houses and other premises in the area, and stated that, at the moment, there are no indications about the existence of more than one shooter.

The Canadian Mounted Police, in the only statement issued so far, states that the alleged perpetrator of the massacre, whose identification was not announced, would have taken his own life inside the school.

“As part of the initial response to the active shooting, police entered the school to locate the threat. During the search, officers located several victims. A person believed to be the perpetrator of the shooting was also found dead, with what appears to be a self-inflicted injury,” the document reads.

Police authorities assured that the students and workers who were present at the educational center were immediately evacuated to safe places.

They also confirmed that investigations were continuing to determine the circumstances that pushed the alleged perpetrator to commit the massacre.

Condolences and amazement

After hearing the news of the tragedy that occurred in the town of British Columbia, the Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carneydeclared himself “devastated” and extended his condolences to the families and friends of the victims.

“My prayers and deepest condolences are with the family and friends of those who have lost loved ones in these acts of violence,” he expressed through his X account.

For his part, David Eby, governor of the province, described the attack as an “unimaginable tragedy,” and expressed his deep sorrow for the lives lost and the devastating impact on the small community.

In turn, he confirmed that the provincial government will now provide all possible support to those affected, and that he will visit the town “as soon as possible” to meet with the affected families, friends and residents.

His objective, he stressed, is to verify the situation in person and coordinate the necessary support to mitigate the effects of the shooting.

According to official information, Tumbler Ridge is a community of around 2,400 inhabitants and its high school, which will remain closed for the rest of the week, has an enrollment of 175 students between the ages of 12 and 17.
