We are just a few weeks away from the start of the christmas season and with it many New Year’s Eve dinners, whether gatherings with family, friends or co-workers, so you may be faced with uncomfortable situations in which in some restaurants you may find yourself demand tip. Is it correct?
According to the Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) This bonus is completely voluntary and cannot be required or included without the client’s consent.
Profeco highlights that restaurants, bars and other establishments cannot add the tip directly to the customer’s account. “The Tip is recognition for the service received, not an obligation“, emphasizes the institution. Additionally, if a consumer detects this practice, they have the right to request correction of the account and report any abuse.
During special seasons, such as the holidays, Profeco usually implements Verification and Surveillance operations to prevent abuses and address complaints against suppliers of goods, products and services. The goal is to ensure that consumers are treated fairly and respectfully in all establishments.
Recommendations
It is essential that diners make their advance reservations and check if the restaurant has cancellation policies. Likewise, they have the right to have the date and time of their reservation respected, as well as the menu, prices and characteristics of the contracted service.
