It is precisely the presence of these metals that when they come out of the wells and come into contact with the air when they reach homes, they oxidize, which gives a yellow or brown color and an unpleasant odor to the water, explains Judith Cardoso, an academic from the Department of Physics of the Iztapalapa Unit.
“Our studies indicate that the water has that bad smell and bad color because it has an excess of two metals with those characteristics and it is because of the type of land where it is extracted, which is rich in iron and manganese,” he comments in an interview with Political expansion.
Diseases that can be caused by drinking tap water
Heavy metals, likely to be contained in water, can have health consequences.
“They accumulate in different parts of our body such as the liver and can cause a series of problems, from gastric to cancer and even death. That is why it is important to be careful that these metals are not found in the water that we are consuming”, he details.
Can you drink tap water? The academic of the UAM Iztapalapa considers that at least in this demarcation it is not recommended.
“In the Iztapalapa mayor’s office, which is where we have studied it, it is not feasible to take it because it has an excess of these metals, beyond what the norm establishes,” he maintains in reference to NOM-127-SSA1-1994.
