Campos de Pesé cancels fine after sanction for contamination of the La Villa river

After eight years of contamination of the waters of the La Villa river, in the Azuero peninsula, with atrazine herbicide, a Compliance Court declared the sentence executed against the company Campos de Pesé SA, which was convicted in 2016 of a crime against the environment and territorial ordering, in the modality against natural resources.

The decision was issued by the compliance judge in charge, Michael Castillo, after the company was forced to pay a fine of one million dollars, through the Oral Trial Court in 2016, in favor of the National Treasury for the sum of one million dollars.

In this hearing, held last Friday, February 18, 2022 to verify the payment of the financial penalty imposed on the company, there was no objection by the intervening party.

Judge Castillo also ordered the formal extinction and filing of the process.

During the recess, the Public Ministry in charge of the investigation presented elements that determined that the contamination affected a large part of the population of that region.

The suspicion of contamination of the river became known after the tributary appeared dyed red. At the time, the company stated that it was vinasse, and that it was not a toxic product, however, after tests carried out on the river water, it was detected that it contained atrazine.
