Awareness campaign by the Brazilian Council of Ophthalmology (CBO) warns of the increased risks that people with diabetes have of developing diabetic retinoplasty, a disease that can cause partial or total loss of vision.
According to the CBO, there are studies that indicate that 4 out of 5 chronic patients are at risk of compromise due to retinoplasty to some degree. The disease affects the retinal blood vessels, the main target in this campaign.
Lasting throughout the month of November, the mobilization promoted by CBO begins this Saturday (1st), with a marathon online of awareness and the beginning of a calendar of joint efforts in various regions of the country, aimed at early diagnosis and treatment. The joint efforts, organized by municipality, can be searched for by website of the campaign.
The public will also be able to follow the programming live between today and Sunday, on the CBO YouTube channel, and access additional content on website official version of 24 Horas pelo Diabetes, which will be updated throughout the month of November with videos, podcasts and testimonials in support of the campaign.
Diabetes is one of the main chronic diseases in the country, and affects more than 16 million people, around 7% of our population. It can be monitored in basic health units, throughout the national territory, free of charge. The Unified Health System (SUS) also provides materials for measuring and controlling the disease, capable of complicating the condition of patients for several other diseases, such as dementia and metabolic diseases. Diabetes itself is a disease with a risk of metabolic and circulatory complications, which can lead to death if not properly treated.
