The president of the Committee for Santa Cruz, Rómulo Calvo, appeared this Monday before the Prosecutor’s Office of that department to give his statement as a defendant for three alleged crimes when he worked at the Caja Petrolera de Salud. At noon he left the Public Ministry and stated that he will defend himself in freedom.

“We are heeding the prosecutor’s call to make known to the people of Santa Cruz and the authorities that have been elected to defend Santa Cruz that unfortunately they are creating a smokescreen, they are intimidating and defending a political party, persecuting institutions and the leaders who are in defense of democracy and freedom for all Bolivians,” said the civic leader before entering the Prosecutor’s Office.

The president of the committee was denounced by the deputy of the MAS Hernán Hinojosa, for the alleged crimes of improper exercise of the profession, breach of duties, contributions and illegitimate advantages of the public servant. The process was promoted in August 2021.

“We are leaving to be able to defend ourselves in freedom, I declare myself persecuted,” Calvo declared after his statement.

After testifying in a denounced capacity, the civic president expressed that it is “unfortunate” that elected deputies from his region promote a “persecution.”

“We are leaving to be able to defend ourselves in freedom, it is unfortunate the actions taken by these deputies who are elected by Santa Cruz, who are elected to defend the region, its people; however, they dedicate themselves to defending a political party (…). I declare myself persecuted, as the Bolivian people are, we are all politically persecuted, because we think differently,” he said.

The civic thanked the people who were at the doors of the Departmental Prosecutor’s Office during the vigil and indicated that this demonstration is a sign that the population is willing to defend freedom and democracy.
