The Abel Furlán-Naldo Brunelli formula will lead the destinies of the Metallurgical Workers’ Union (UOM) for the next four years, after the historic national secretary general, Antonio Caló, was unable to form a list of unity and agreed to step aside in elections for the renewal of union positions.
Caló, former head of the union’s powerful Buenos Aires branch and current Secretary of the Interior of the CGT’s board of directors elected last November, was unable to renew his mandate due to the onslaught of several opposition branches.
Caló was trying to renew his position until 2026 with Brunelli as deputy, but he had to resign his claim in the hands of Furlán, former national deputy of the Front for the Victory of Zárate-Campana, who will be accompanied by that leader.
The union sources assured Télam that Caló “could not overcome the great discomfort that exists in several sections based on the salary reality of the workers, especially in recent years”, and they ventured that the veteran leader “will now find it very difficult to base his permanence in the CGT”.
Recently, for example, Adrián Pérez – 49 years old – had later imposed himself by just over 200 votes on the historic leader Francisco Gutiérrez, who led the Quilmes-Berazategui-Florencio Varela branch for 38 years.
