Calls to face projects to privatize water

Miguel Ponce

Organizations will march against the construction of the dam.

Santiago. A group of social and political organizations called on the people of Santiago and citizens of the Cibao provinces to confront the supposed plans for the privatization of water.

The parties, Caamañista Movement, Maoist Communist Party, Broad Front, Alianza País, Patria Para Todos, Ciudadanos Communist Party of Labor PCT, Force of the Revolution and Gentio for Political Change, said they were against the attempt to build a hydroelectric dam in Las Placetas as well as in Boca de los Ríos, Santiago Rodríguez, without environmental and social permits.

The organizations support the demands made by other towns that demand the construction of an aqueduct for Baitoa and Sabana Iglesia and the construction of the sewage system for Licey al Medio, justifying the march called by environmental, social, feminist and popular organizations.

To show their opposition to the construction of the Las Placetas dam, they have convened for this coming Sunday, March 20, a tour of various sectors of Santiago. Politicians’ representatives criticize the current government’s inclination towards the privatization of public services, together with the rise in fuel prices, the increase in the family basket and inflation.

It indicates that this should serve as an alert to prevent privatization through social struggle through any denomination, be it by trust, public-private alliance or sale of a vital service for the survival of human beings, animals and plants, such as water. “We will defend water as an inalienable, unseizable, imprescriptible asset, as enshrined in the Dominican Constitution in article 15,” they said. They understand that Inapa and Coraasan must supply water to the population, and the government must build the infrastructure to bring the precious liquid to all homes. Likewise, it asks the Ministry of the Environment to apply the law strictly, without causing environmental damage.
