Call for the 3rd edition of “25 Women in Science – Latin America” ​​is now open

This initiative that, since its creation in 2020, has sought to recognize in the scientific community women who have promoted and developed projects in the scientific field in Latin America, seeks to provide greater visibility to women in scientific areas and the impact they are generating in our communities to continue inspiring girls, young women and women throughout the region to study STEM disciplines (in English Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), with the aim of showing the importance of the participation of these women in areas that during For a long time they were considered exclusive to the male gender.

According to UNESCO, in the world, women represent only 35% of those who study higher education in STEM careers and women represent less than 30% of scientific researchers.

Gender gaps reduce the possibilities of innovation and new perspectives to address current and future challenges. For this reason, 3M opens the call for its third edition in Latin American countries, and invites all As in past editions, the process Juries from the 3M Research & Development area will participate in the evaluation of the projects, as well as by prominent academics, leaders and/or specialists in the scientific industry, as well as people who have extensive experience in the areas of science, research, innovation, sustainability and entrepreneurship from Latin American countries; to select the 25 winning scientists of 2023.

Some of the evaluation criteria that will be taken into account in the selection of the scientists will be: Potential for direct or indirect social impact in the region, innovation and viability of the project; maturity of the idea, demonstrated in the results of initial tests/pilot; capacity and experience of the candidate to develop the project presented.

Participants who wish to apply for this third edition must meet the following profile:

1. Be a woman, of legal age, born and with training and/or residence in a Latin American country.

2. Have the authorship or have participated leading at least one project that has at least one prototype/pilot test of the idea of ​​scientific innovation based on the STEM philosophy.

3. It is essential to have documentation that validates the intellectual property and/or institutional faith of participation in the project with which you apply.

4. Have a passion for communicating and giving visibility to science from a female perspective; and mainly, that it supports the empowerment of women in the field of STEM disciplines. “One of our goals as an innovation and science company is to continue promoting the conversation regarding the importance of gender diversity in scientific areas; considered by many people, even today, exclusively for men.

«We want the new generations of girls to be inspired by professionals in the field, and see that they can also contribute with great visions to society and their community. We trust more than ever that 3M is gradually breaking down the barriers and myths surrounding scientific areas, and we continue to bet on new talent, ideas and innovation”, commented Adriana Rius, director of communication and branding for 3M Latin America.

The 25 women scientists recognized for the third edition will have access and will be part of a visibility platform that includes, among other things, the inclusion of their projects in the commemorative book “25 Women in Latin American Science”, visibility of their project and trajectory with the regional media in Latin America, the company’s Curiosity Blog and 3M’s social networks.
