Call for more support for small-scale aquaculture

Llama a dar más apoyo a la acuicultura de pequeña escala

The president of the Center for Agricultural and Forestry Development (Cedaf), Santiago Tejadaadvocated paying more attention to the aquaculture small-scale, or family, and said that this activity “shows more attributes than extractive fishing and other types of protein production.”

Tejada expressed this opinion when delivering the keynote speech at the opening ceremony of the First CONADAO Aquaculture Congress 2022 “Regional Aquaculture: present and future” that takes place in the country until September three.

The president of Cedaf expressed that aquaculture offers very fresh products, of a more uniform size, of excellent and controllable quality, and at reasonable prices and less fluctuating than in the fishing activities.

He said that usually aquaculturists do not participate in the “active” sale of their productslimiting themselves to marketing them directly in their communities, or, in the case of clients from other destinations, selling them through intermediaries, who appropriate a high proportion of the price paid by the final consumer, to the detriment of the fish farmer.

He explained that the support policies and credit support for small-scale aquaculture in the region must receive special attention so that, together with technical assistance programs, they allow the small producer to develop increasingly autonomous.
