The food basket, according to the Venezuelan Finance Observatory, experienced an increase since at least March 2022 when Venezuelans, at that time, could buy only 10.5% of it
The Venezuelan Finance Observatory (OVF) reported on Thursday, May 18 through its account on Twitter that the food basket, which consists of 80 products, stood at Bs 9,798 during the month of April; which is equivalent to 390 dollars and which also represents an increase of 0.58% compared to the month of March.
The graphs refer to the fact that not even with the salary in the private company, which according to the OVF is around 142 dollars, and even less with the 30 dollars that public administration employees receive with the “indexed war bond”, do they reach to be able to afford what the basic food basket is worth.
By April 2023, many Venezuelans can only cover 1.79% of the basic basket which, if compared to April 2022, the purchasing power of Venezuelans has decreased by approximately eight points, since last year the Venezuelans could buy 9.91% of the goods.

Although there was not much variation between March and April of this year regarding what a citizen can cover with their income, when looking at March 2022 and April 2023, at least 10% of the same basket could be covered, which decreased During last year.

The OVF figures are a little more conservative than those shown by the Center for Documentation and Social Analysis of the Venezuelan Federation of Teachers (Cendas-FVM), directed by Oscar Meza, since he estimates that feeding a family of five is increasingly uphill, despite the timid recovery experienced by the Venezuelan economy in the last two years, since at least $510.88 is required to cover all the products in the Family Food Basket In March.
These measurements of the food basket come to light after President Nicolás Maduro announced an increase in food vouchers and “economic warfare” to bring the income of public workers to 70 dollars; which is also insufficient to be able to live.
