The Lima Bar Association (CAL) announced that it will initiate a disciplinary process against the congresswoman of the Popular Democratic Bloc bench, Susel Paredes, after the parliamentarian stated that “she is fed up with being forced to belong to the Bar Association.” .
The CAL initiative occurs despite the fact that congressmen cannot be prosecuted without prior authorization from Congress or the Permanent Commission, according to article 93 of the Constitution.
According to the entity’s statement, Susel Paredes has seriously affected the reputation of the Bar Association by expressing her discomfort by saying that she is obliged to belong to the Bar Association, in addition to mentioning that “she receives a lot of money.”
The institution also considered that such statements not only harm the “integrity of the institution, but also distort the important function it plays in protecting the rule of law.”
It also notes that its members must comply with the highest standards of professional conduct, as stipulated in the Lawyer’s Code of Ethics. For this reason, he argues that “any non-compliance will be rigorously investigated.
Susel Paredes rejects investigation against him
La República contacted Congresswoman Susel Paredes, who stated that the Bar Association does not respect opinions. According to him, the process against him “is more political than legal.”
“I respect everyone’s decision; the school is the one who does not respect the opinion (…). I am a free person, they must respect my opinion. I am obliged to practice my profession and not now.” said Susel Paredes.
“They want to sanction me for an opinion, I have not insulted them. For expressing an opinion they want to prosecute me; this is more political than legal. Furthermore, congressmen cannot be sanctioned for their opinions,” he added.
