The Development Bank of Latin America (CAF) presented together with the state company, Agua y Saneamientos Argentinos (AySA), the report Infrastructure in the Development of Latin America (IDEAL) 2022, entitled “Energy, water and health for a better environment ambient”.

The event was held at the Palacio de las Aguas Corrientes and It had the participation of the president of the organization, Sergio Díaz-Granados; the corporate vice president of strategic programming, Christian Asinelli; the head of AySA, Malena Galmarini; and the undersecretary of International Financial Relations for Development, Leandro Gorgal.

“IDEAL is one of the most important knowledge reports that CAF has, which was born with the objective of studying what happens to our infrastructure throughout Latin America, in the context of the profound impact that global warming has on the region. Latin America is a continent that emits in proportion to its economic activity and its population. In other words, we are not a large emitting region, but we do suffer dramatically from the consequences of climate change, especially in the Caribbean. Our bank has the role and commitment to make this situation visible globally,” he said. diaz granados.

For his part, Malena Galmarini, president of AySA, considered: “For us it is not an expense, it is an investment that our communities have drinking water and sewerage. I want to thank all the support from CAF. It is impossible that in Latin America and Argentina, large-scale works can be developed without the international support and accompaniment that is required. There is no budget of a country that can support these works that are of more than 1000 million dollars. We believe that working on energy, water, health and the environment cannot be done alone. It cannot be done by just one government, nor one or several international banks, but rather with the community, collectively”.

In line with the decarbonization commitments assumed by the continent, the report analyzes the multiple energy matrices of the region and proposes initiatives that promote the transition towards a system based on primary sources with a lower level of emissions, a greater electrical component, a decrease in energy intensity and an increase in carbon capture and storage (CCS) mechanisms, among others.

In the water sector, it reviews the policies, regulations and investments in infrastructure that are carried out in the region, and that aim to limit polluting activities, promote the circular economy and promote a more efficient management model focused on the conservation of the resource. hydric.

Lastly, it also incorporates into its analysis the health sector and its response capacity to possible disruptive events based on the lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The report aims to promote tools and mechanisms to transform the current economic paradigm into a sustainable and climate-resilient model, which will ensure a better quality of life for all Latin Americans and Caribbean people.
