The political table of the Cabildo Abierto (CA) resolved to express its rejection of the draft law of euthanasia whose treatment is currently taking place in Parliament and asked that, if it is approved, President Lacalle Pou vetoes the legal norm.
The resolution took place this Thursday, after the lobbying party’s political table met to discuss “some central issues of current national affairs.” As a result of the meeting, the member of the government coalition touched on up to three relevant points and announced actions.
In the first place, Cabildo Abierto expressed its support for the educational reform that the Executive is promoting at this time. The party led by Senator Guido Manini Ríos considers that this reform “complies with a commitment made to the citizenry in 2019 and that was endorsed in the referendum this year 2022.”
Along these lines, CA expressed its solidarity with the authorities of the Central Board of Directors (Codicen), who are victims of a “campaign of aggression”. “We reject the campaign of aggression that is being launched by some groups that for several years have been blocking any possibility of promoting changes to a system that expels too many young people.”
Euthanasia proposal ‘not centered on people’
Likewise, the lobbyists emphasized their rejection of the bill promoted by the Broad Front and the Colorado Party on euthanasia, whose legal body was approved this week in the Deputies’ Health Commission.
“We are convinced that this project does not focus on people and violates the necessary guarantees for the defense of life,” they maintain.
Given the possibility of its approval, CA asks President Luis Lacalle Pou, in the event that this occurs, “to consider the possibility of interposing by the Executive Branch the corresponding observations (veto) by virtue of the powers granted to him by article 138 of the Constitution.
Social security reform
On the other hand, the political table announced that the committee of experts installed for the initial study of the draft law for the social security reform has already finished its analysis work. Likewise, they indicated that this group formulated some modifications, which they have already sent to the Executive Power.
“The political table reiterates its willingness to contribute to advancing in a reform that cannot be postponed for the country, fully attending to all of the subsystems, with a criterion of true universality and justice,” the document states.
Call for a multipardiary scope
The last point of the declaration is a call by the Cabildo Abierto to all the parties with parliamentary representation to establish a multi-party environment aimed at seeking “consensus on long-term policies, that go through various periods of government and several generations, that ensure State policies with strong national support, producibility and solid continuity”.
“The purpose is to establish an area with an open agenda, in which agreements are developed on issues such as, by way of example, social security reform, demographic policy, the country’s international insertion, the fight against drug trafficking and organized crime and fight against poverty,” the statement explains.
Likewise, they point out that this multi-party sphere materializes the creation of a new “national programmatic concertation”. This would be made up of “the University of the Republic, private university institutes, academic centers, the trade union movement, student associations, cooperatives, shopping centers, rural organizations, business chambers, professional groups and other social forces of the Republic.”
For this, the lobbyists will request an audience with the national authorities of the Broad Front, the National Party, the Colorado Party, the Intransigent Radical Ecologist Party, the People’s Party and the Independent Party.
