Businessmen demand labor reform: They insist on a new regime for contracts and limits on unemployment

Santo Domingo.- Representatives of the business sector attended the National Congress this Wednesday to dialogue on the reform of the Labor Code during a meeting before the Special Commission of the Senate, chaired by Senator Rafael Duluc.

At this meeting the private sector reaffirmed his position of preserving the acquired rights of workers and proposed the creation of an alternative labor regime that would apply exclusively to new employment contractssigned after the entry into force of the new Labor Code.

This new regime would maintain unemployment as a right, with an applicable double stop: a limit of six years of seniority and a maximum of ten salaries, among other options.

Celso Juan Marranzini, president of the CONEPstressed the need for this labor reform to promote the creation of formal jobs, and make it easier for large companies and SMEs to work according to the law in the salary committee to improve them.

“We are willing to work together with this commission in a roadmap that defines the next steps to follow in this review process,” he indicated.

The business sector highlighted that the labor informality, which affects 55.3% of workers according to data from the Central Bank as of September 2024, represents a serious risk for the social security system.

“If contributions are not made, thousands of workers are left without health coverage.” health and pensions. Furthermore, unemployment becomes a brake on salary increases,” said Laura Peña Izquierdo, president of the Employers’ Confederation of the Dominican Republic (COPARDOM).

“The objective is to achieve a Labor Code that responds to the needs of the future without affecting the rights already acquired. This is the ideal time to implement these adjustments and encourage formalization of the labor market“, considered Julio V. Brache, president of the Association of Industries of the Dominican Republic (AIRD).
