According to figures from the National Revolutionary Police (PNR), during 2022 they occurred in Cuba 9,848 traffic accidents —at a rate of 27 per day— that cost the lives of 700 people and left 7,547 injured.
The statistics – which belong to the annual report of the National Viability Commission – mark a decrease compared to the years prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, dozens of accidents are recorded daily in various provinces of the country, in many cases with fatalities.
In Havana alone, 3,300 road accidents occurred last year, with a balance of more than 100 deaths; the majority of fatalities being children and the elderly.
