A patrol of Army of the Dominican Republic intercepted a bus on the Elías Piña-Santo Domingo route, after the driver ignored a stop sign issued by the military.
The vehicle was stopped at the exit of the municipality of Las Matas de Farfán, San Juan province, where, upon being inspected, it was discovered that it was transporting 24 Haitian nationals with irregular immigration status.
The bus, Hyundai brand and with the license plate I071985, hid the migrants in various places in the vehicle, including three of them, which were found in the luggage compartment. The 24 detainees include 18 men, 4 women and 2 minors.
The driver and the conductor, identified as Dominicans Jenly Alberto Núñez Flores and Mateo Silvestre Severino, respectively, were arrested and taken into military custody. Both will be sent to the Public Ministry to face charges for trafficking of undocumented immigrants.
For their part, the 24 Haitians were transferred to the General Pedro Florentino Fortress, from where they will be handed over to the General Directorate of Migration for repatriation, in accordance with established procedures.
This operation is part of the efforts of the Dominican authorities to combat the illegal trafficking of migrants and regulate the immigration situation in the country.
