The Government of the city of Buenos Aires fired the leadership of the local Police this Tuesday after 17 detainees in the premises of that security force escaped through a hole opened in the wall.
The capital authorities removed the chief of the Buenos Aires City Police, Pablo Kisch, and the deputy chief, Jorge Azzolina, from their positions and appointed Diego Casaló and Carla Mangiameli, respectively, to replace them.
The measure was adopted after on Monday night 17 people who were detained in a mayor’s office in the capital’s Liniers neighborhood escaped through a hole opened in the wall, a fact that is added to other similar events recorded this year.
At a press conference, the Minister of Security of the city of Buenos Aires, Waldo Wolff, said that, in addition to the changes in the police leadership announced this Tuesday, modifications will be made to the entire staff of the force.
“We fully trust the leadership of our force. We thank those who were there. We are all subjects of permanent examination. But we are not going to allow events of this nature to occur,” Wolff stated.
The minister asserted that “neither police incapacity nor collusion” with criminals will be allowed.
“17 people cannot escape without anyone seeing them, surrounded by police and making a hole. We cannot find out two hours later. That is either connivance or negligence. And, for both reasons, profound changes must be made in the Police and we are doing them,” he said.
Wolff confirmed that one of the escaped detainees has already been recaptured and that work is being done to find the other 16.
According to local media, of the 17 escaped people, eleven are Argentine nationals and six are Chileans. EFE
