The Buenaventura Mining Company projects that Trapiche, one of its main copper projects located in the province of Antabamba, Apurímac region, could begin operations around the year 2030. Currently, the mining company maintains an active presence in different regions of the country as part of a growth strategy based on exploration, new developments and economic decentralization.
“I am convinced that there is enormous potential to find new deposits,” said Roque Benavides, president of the mining company, in an interview with the Institute of Mining Engineers of Peru (IIMP). He highlighted that in the country “there is not a single mine that is in production and that does not have surface outcrops,” which opens opportunities for deep discoveries along the Andes Mountains.
Along these lines, Benavides specified that the mining company has been accelerating its commitment to exploration, with three to four projects underway. “These projects are advancing and we are finding very interesting indications,” said Benavides.
Trust, transformation and technology
The strategy, according to the executive, combines technological innovation with sustained work to build trust in the territories where it operates.
The progress of these exploratory projects, he specified, is supported by the intensive use of new technologies applied to the mining industry. “Today with drones, with geophysics, geochemistry and new technologies they never cease to surprise us. Peru has the right and obligation to value all our resources,” he indicated, highlighting the transformation that the sector is experiencing.
Along with technology, Benavides stressed that social trust is a determining factor for the viability of exploration. Along these lines, he mentioned the El Algarrobo project, in Piura, which has been being socialized with local communities and authorities. “It is not about pressuring people, but about transmitting a clear message: we want to create jobs and contribute to generating wealth in rural areas,” he emphasized.
Benavides will participate as one of the national speakers of the World Mining Congress 2026, where the IIMP is the organizer. The event will be held at the Lima Convention Center, from June 24 to 26, and will have as its central theme “Mining for the Future: Trust, Transformation and Technology”, a vision that dialogues with the main challenges that global mining faces today.
