The Chamber of Deputies and Deputies rejected on Tuesday, with 65 votes in favor, 69 against and six abstentions, the variable expenses of the Ministry of the Interior.
Some parliamentarians valued the 4% increase in security and that, for the first time, a plan against organized crime was promoted. However, another pointed out that the budget is meager and called for an increase, among other demands.
Deputy diego schalper (RN) indicated that “we have rejected the security budget that the government has presented. We do it with the conviction that raising 0.8% to the PDI, 0.3% to the Prosecutor’s Office and 2% to the Carabineros has no presentation at the moment in which we are”.
approved proposals
In contrast, the Chamber declared admissible several indications that established new matters or possibilities of use of the assigned resources. That was the case of proposals to provide free legal advice and defense in trials to victims of violent crimes. Likewise, to add Los Lagos among the regions where the Rural Violence program will be applied.
Other initiatives include resources for renting houses for Carabineros personnel and for the acquisition of technology to search for people; and a readjustment for the salaries of police officers. Regarding some of these matters, the Executive, through the Minister of Finance, made a reservation of constitutionality.
Likewise, all requests for information and two indications from the Government were approved. The first one considers amounts for technological equipment and an automated biometric identification system in the PDI. The other increases the budget of that institution for the Zero Microtrafficking Plan by $251 billion.
Sectorally, resources for the training and improvement of Carabineros were discarded. In particular, the reduction in this item was criticized and an increase was requested. Something similar happened with the National Migration Service.
