However, the actor’s story took an unexpected turn almost four years ago, when his family revealed that he suffered from aphasiaa disorder that affects language.

Later, it was confirmed that this condition was only the first symptom of a much more complex disease: frontotemporal dementia (FTD)a progressive neurodegenerative impairment that affects behavior, personality, and communication skills.

Since then, the family has shared part of the difficult process, explaining that the disease has advanced to the point that Willis speaks very little and face motor difficulties. Even so, in recent months he has remained in a relatively stable phase, always surrounded by the support of his loved ones.

And it was precisely his family that now confirmed a brave and important decision: After his death, Bruce Willis’ brain will be donated to science to study frontotemporal dementia.

Emma Heming Willishis wife, announced the decision in The Unexpected Journey, the book in which he shares the hardest chapters of this process and how the family chose to transform a painful experience into an opportunity to contribute to science.

As he explained, the decision was made together and had the support of all of Bruce’s daughters, both those he has with her and those he shares with Demi Moore.

The purpose is to allow researchers to directly study the brain tissue affected by frontotemporal dementia, a key step in advancing more accurate diagnoses and future treatments.

What is frontotemporal dementia?

The frontotemporal dementiaunlike Alzheimer’s, mainly affects people under 65 years of age and first affects language and behavior.

Its postmortem study is necessary to identify abnormal proteins such as TDP-43responsible for the deterioration, and possible mutations that allow us to understand why it appears and how to combat it.
