This Saturday morning, Ezequiel Mairena, 31, brother of political prisoner and peasant leader Medardo Mairena, who has been detained in El Chipote for 11 months, died in a traffic accident.

“Today at 3:20 in the morning he passed away. She didn’t hold out. They couldn’t operate on him because he had high blood pressure. The doctors said that if he had an operation, he couldn’t stand it, the doctors were trying to stabilize him, “he said. Alfredo Mareina, another of his brothers, to the media outlet 100% Noticias.

The accident occurred at the Lóvago junction in Chontales and at the time of the mishap, Ezequiel Mairena was transferred to the Asunción Regional Hospital in Juigalpa, but was later sent to Managua due to the seriousness of his injuries. It is known that the driver and assistant of the truck in which he was traveling were also taken to hospital.

Family does not get permission for the funeral

According to Mairena’s relative, they tried to get special permission from the corresponding authorities so that Medardo Mairena could attend the funeral, but there were no positive responses. “It is going to be a difficult situation. The worst thing is that Medardo still doesn’t realize it. We have called Chipote to allow them to attend the funeral, but they send us to do paperwork in the courts and the courts are not attending today,” Alfredo Mairena, still affected by the tragedy, told 100% Noticias.

In the last year, several relatives of political prisoners detained in the electoral context have died and the regime has not allowed them to attend their funeral services. Among these cases is the death of the mothers of the student leader, Max Jerez, and the former president of the Superior Council of Private Enterprise (Cosep), José Adán Aguerri.

“Doña Hilda could not say goodbye to her son and José Adán could not see his mother. Doña Hilda, woman of faith, exemplary and brave citizen. The Lord has called her to her eternal glory and already rests in her bosom. We pray to God to send her family the spiritual consolation that mitigates her pain, ”the Nicaraguan Civic Alliance published when the former business leader died.

This is a practice the regime has used since 2018, when it imprisoned more than 700 people who participated in civic protests and later released most through an amnesty. During this period they died more than four mothers without seeing their children in freedom and they couldn’t say goodbye to them either.
