Ezekiel Mairena31 years old, brother of the former presidential candidate who was a political prisoner Medardo Mairena Sequeiradied early this Saturday, June 25, after suffering a traffic accident on the El Rama-Managua highway, family members and the Peasant Movement of Nicaragua confirmed.
Journalistic information indicates that on the night of Thursday, June 23, Mairena, together with four people, was traveling in a RS1370 license plate truck that was transporting road products. Upon reaching a hill at kilometer 162 of the Juigalpa-El Rama highway, the truck overturned trying to avoid two pipes.
«He was in a cargo truck, which was going back. He was transferred (to a hospital center) from Juigalpa, then to Managua, but they could not operate on him because he had high blood pressure », his brother Alfredo Mairena told Article 66.
The young man was in the Lenín Fonseca Hospital, where they were informed that he was brain dead and kept him connected to an artificial respirator, Alfredo explained.
In the face of the tragedy, the relatives have called the authorities of the Directorate of Judicial Assistance, known as “El Nuevo Chipote”, in Managua, to ask that the peasant leader Medardo be able to attend the candle or the funeral; however, they have not received a positive response.

“El Chipote has been called repeatedly and, well, they order legal procedures two days later… because the Courts are not open today. They have not agreed and now that they are called they no longer respond. They are being asked to, at least, allow us to speak with him (Medardo) to inform him of the unfortunate news, but they are silent, they do not answer, “lamented Alfredo.
The body of Ezequiel Mairena, Medardo’s younger brother, has already been transferred to La Unión, Nueva Guinea, where he will be laid to rest this Saturday and buried on Sunday the 26th.
“We are going to continue insisting (so that they give Medardo permission), but we know that we are in a regime in which rights are worthless and we are at their will,” added Alfredo.
Ezequiel Mairena worked in water transport, he had no children. His family regrets that the young man cannot be fired by all his brothers, because some are in exile and in jail.
